Friday Fact - Cheap and Edible Christmas Decorations!

Did you know that Animal Crackers are not really crackers at all but are cookies that were imported to the United States from England in the late 1800's? What is interesting is that the boxes were designed with a string handle so they could be hung on the Christmas Tree. One box of crackers cost 5 cents.

Oh I never knew that they were meant to be Christmas ornaments! Getting a box of these animal crackers was always my special treat when we went grocery shopping. I love them! Thanks for sharing that neat fact!

I am enjoying these "neat facts". I did not know that the boxes were used as ornaments. I was thinking the other day about how spoiled we are. Getting an ornament was a big thing back then. It was sometimes a financial sacrifice. Now, we get what we want when we want. Christmas and Birthdays were the only time I would get presents as a kid. These days kids often get toys 2-3 times a week. Kind of sad in my opinion.
