Braves vs. Nationals

Okay, I must admit it was a bit of a bummer that the Braves lost the opening game to the Nationals last night. But, in a way, I am glad for the Nationals. I mean, it was their opening night, new stadium and the President of the United States was there. How cool is that that they won and they got to show their fans a good time?? So, it is with mixed feelings that I post this.

I am originally from D.C. and the first baseball game I ever went to was in RFK Stadium there. I went with my dad when I was about 7 or 8; that was when Frank Howard was the big home-run hitter for the "Washington Senators". I know, most of you won't remember, cuz your younger than me!! But, it was fun and I remember being in school one day and naming off all the teams and the good players and my teacher just kind of looked at me as if I was really weird. I guess it was strange being a girl and loving baseball.

Anyway, I still love baseball but now my allegiances lie further south with the Braves and I personally think we have a great team this year. I thought Tim Hudson pitched an awesome game last night but our first inning defensively was horrible!

I'm looking forward to tonight's game, our home opener. We're having some folks over to share the evening with us. I just hope we win!!

Be prepared, I'm gonna be talking a lot about the Braves this year. I hope you don't mind!!

Pet Peeve

Okay, here's my new pet peeve. Actually it's been bothering me for a while, but I almost got in a wreck today. Why? Because the person that almost hit me was spending more time and attention on her cell phone than she was on her driving. Seriously, folks, more times than not, when I see someone swerving on the road, getting too close to my car or another car, pulling out unsafely in traffic, etc... it's because they're talking on a cell phone.
Now, don't get me wrong... I absolutely love technology and am so thankful that we have cell phones. Especially since I have young adult and teenage children and it brings much peace of mind. But honestly, people need to realize that they could kill themselves or someone else while driving and trying to manipulate a phone. It's not so much the talking but it's the texting, scrolling, etc... that pulls your attention away.
Okay, sorry for the rant, I feel better now!

Good Friday

Calling the day of the Crucifixion ‘Good’ Friday is a designation that is peculiar to the English language. In German, for example, it is called Karfreitag. The Kar part is an obsolete word, the ancestor of the English word "care" in the sense of cares and woes, and it meant mourning. So in German, it is Mourning Friday. And that is what the disciples did on that day—they mourned. They thought all was lost.

I’ve read that the word "good" used to have a secondary meaning of holy or sacred. I know in the Spanish language they call this day "Viernes Santo" which literally means "Holy Friday". There are also a number of cases in set phrases where the words "God" and "good" have been switched around because of their similarity. One case was the phrase "God be with you", which today is just "good-bye". So, maybe, Good Friday was originally God’s Friday. But I think we call it Good Friday because, in all consideration of the day and the event, all of that tragedy brought about the greatest good there could ever be.

I can see value in any of the above terminologies. If we choose to call it "Mourning Friday", as in German, we are truly recognizing the significance of this day and it's effect on each of our lives; taking up our own cross, if you will, fully conscious that the Christian walk is seldom an easy journey. If we choose to call this special day "Holy Friday" then we are acknowledging that God, in all of His holiness and wisdom, did the only thing that could be done to redeem mankind from the curse of sin and death, offered up a perfect and spotless sacrifice. But, if we call it "Good Friday", as in English, we are confessing the Christian hope that no tragedy—not even death—can overwhelm God’s kindness, goodness, love, and grace.
I elect to see today as all of the above; a day of 'mourning', a 'Holy' day and a 'good' day because the best is yet to come. Friday is here, but Sunday is coming!! Hallelujah!

AFLAC Scam

Watch out for this one!!

It seems there's a new way for people to steal money from individuals on the street.

Recently it's been reported that up to four individuals have been approaching people and act as if they are in need of assistance. While the younger three get the person's attention and try to act cute and helpless, the oldest is pilfering through a purse or bag to get money and/or valuables. It seems to be happening in bigger cities so far, but, who knows?, it could happen anywhere and you or I could be the next victim.

So just to let you know, BEWARE!!
